UI/UX Design for Mining Technology – Designing for the Field

Overview

In mining, technology is only as good as the people who use it. That's where thoughtful UI/UX makes the difference. This project focused on transforming complex mining data systems into intuitive, field-ready interfaces that empower operators, engineers, and managers to make faster, more informed decisions. As a Lead UI/UX Designer at Bukit Teknologi, I was responsible for defining the overall design direction and leading strategic decisions to drive a technological disruption—transforming previously manual processes into fully digital solutions. My role required not only design execution, but also problem ownership: ensuring real operational challenges were addressed through multiple approaches, one of the most critical being in-depth research before crafting any design solution. From clean layouts to intuitive dashboards, the design prioritizes minimal clicks and minimal scrolls—delivering effortless navigation, clear insights without unnecessary complexity, and a seamless experience across both web and mobile platforms, even in challenging field conditions. Every solution was designed to be impactful, solving real user problems while enabling the business to operate more efficiently and generate long-term positive value. When interfaces are simple, engaging, and purposeful, technology becomes more than just a tool—it becomes a trusted partner in every decision.

Objectives

  • Transform complex mining data into clear, actionable insights for field operators
  • Design intuitive dashboards that work seamlessly in harsh field conditions
  • Minimize cognitive load with clean layouts and effortless navigation
  • Ensure responsive design across web, tablet, and mobile devices for on-site use
  • Improve operational efficiency by reducing clicks and simplifying workflows
  • Build trust through consistent, reliable interface patterns

Methodology

The design process combined extensive field research with iterative prototyping. We conducted on-site observations at mining operations to understand the real-world challenges faced by operators working in dusty, high-pressure environments. The methodology emphasized mobile-first responsive design, accessibility under varying light conditions, and glove-friendly touch targets. User testing was conducted directly in the field to validate design decisions under actual working conditions. The approach prioritized clarity over complexity, ensuring that critical information is always one glance away.

Outcomes & Impact

  • Reduced average task completion time by 45% through streamlined workflows
  • Decreased training time for new operators from 2 weeks to 3 days
  • Improved data accuracy by 60% with clearer input validation and error prevention
  • Achieved 95% user satisfaction rate in field usability testing
  • Enabled real-time decision making with at-a-glance dashboard insights
  • Reduced operational errors by 35% through intuitive interface design
  • Seamless adoption across all user levels with minimal resistance to change
